Orthotics Q & A
What are orthotics?
Orthotics refer to treatment devices used to correct problems in the ankle and foot. While they look similar to traditional insoles, they’re custom made to mold to the shape of your foot and correct a specific issue.
Dr. Carter-Robin offers personalized and high-quality orthotic services to ensure the proper alignment, blood circulation, and comfort of your feet and ankles.
When should I consider getting custom orthotics?
Dr. Carter-Robin recommends orthotics if you’re experiencing any of a range of issues relating to your foot and ankle, including:
- Bunions
- Heel pain
- Ankle pain
- Foot arch pain
- Leg pain
- Plantar fasciitis
- Heel spurs
If you’ve experienced any of the above, you might want to get in touch with the office to discuss your orthotic options.
How do orthotics work?
Custom-made orthotics work by correcting the alignment of your feet and ankles. If your feet turn inward when you walk, the orthotics redirect them to face forward.
Since they’re custom made, orthotics should feel natural and comfortable. They provide support in areas that need it. If you’re used to wearing shoes without insoles, you might need a couple of days to adjust to your orthotics, but this is by no means painful or uncomfortable.
How are orthotics made?
Dr. Carter-Robin will either create a plaster cast of your foot or make a foam impression of your foot. In doing so, your doctor can create an orthotic device that uniquely fits your foot. The orthotics are made within a few days.
How long will my orthotics last?
Just like any other medical device, the durability of orthotics depends greatly on how you take care of them. In general, these high-quality devices are meant to last for years without the need for replacement.
