Toenail Fungus Q & A
What is toenail fungus?
Toenail fungus is an infection caused by fungal microorganisms. It usually infiltrates your toenail where the cuticle grows. Over time, the infection spreads, making your nail appear thickened, yellow, and painful.
Anyone can develop toenail fungus, but you’re more likely to get it if you spend time at public facilities like gyms or swimming pools. Your feet are susceptible to fungus, because of the warm, moist, and dark environment your shoes provide.
Is toenail fungus something to worry about?
If you’re in good health, toenail fungus isn’t something to worry about. However, if you have a chronic condition like diabetes or a circulatory disorder, you’re more likely to develop a bacterial infection or other complications as a result.
Left unmanaged, fungal infections compromise your nail and soft tissues, allowing bacteria to enter your bloodstream. If you’re living with a chronic condition and you suspect you have toenail fungus, make an appointment with Dr. Carter-Robin, DPM, PC. The sooner you receive treatment, the less likely you are to experience complications.
How is toenail fungus diagnosed?
Toenail fungus doesn’t always present obvious symptoms. Several other health conditions can cause your toenail to become discolored, including:
- Traumatic injury
- Psoriasis
- Vitamin deficiency
- Flat feet
It’s important you receive the right diagnosis, so you can receive the treatment from which you’ll benefit most.
First, Dr. Carter-Robin examines your feet and toes. Next, she trims your toenails and sends the sample to a laboratory for testing. The laboratory determines the strain of fungus that’s causing your symptoms. Or, if your symptoms are the result of another problem, they rule out fungal infection as a cause. Once Dr. Carter-Robin has this information, she develops a custom treatment plan based on your individual needs.
How is toenail fungus treated?
No two toenail fungus treatment plans are exactly alike. However, Dr. Carter-Robin offers several different options to address toenail fungus, including:
- Topical antifungal medication
- Laser therapy
- Oral antifungal medication
- Topical keratolytic medication
She also offers a cosmetic solution known as Keryflex® to improve the appearance of nails damaged by fungus. KeryFlex is a medicated nail extension that Dr. Carter-Robin attaches to your natural nail. It grows with your nail and helps it look natural and healthy.
If you have discolored or thickening toenails, don’t wait to see what happens. Make an appointment at Stephanie Carter-Robin, DPM, PC today by calling the office or clicking the online booking tool.
